Chicago Dogs swept by the Kane County Cougars following 7-2 loss.

Just last weekend, the Chicago Dogs took two out of three games against Kane County on the road. This time around, the Dogs couldn’t put together one victory playing Kane County at home.

Nick Belzer, the starting pitcher for Kane County, was hit early, allowing two runs in the second inning to the Dogs. Antonio Barranca walked, then scored, after Nick Novak hit a triple to left field. Novak then scored following a Dusty Stroup sacrifice fly to right field.

The two runs scored in the second inning were the only runs the Dogs scored throughout the game, leaving eight runners on base.

Dogs starting pitcher John Baker got himself into several early scenarios, but found ways to escape, without any damage to the early Dogs lead.

Baker stood on the mound for 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out five.

Baker was relieved by Cal Djuraskovic, after hitting 94 pitches. Djuraskovic finished off Baker’s final inning, allowing a hit and walking a batter, but successfully got out of the jam.

Djuraskovic was not put back out for more work. The Dogs instead turned to Augie Voight. Voight has come off to a rocky start thus far, allowing runs in six of his eight bullpen appearances of the season, heading into game three.

Voight retired the first batter he faced, Ernny Ordonez, before turning the game real quick. Voight proceeded to allow three hits and two walks for a total of two runs. Voight, unable to retire more than one out, was relieved by Lukas Galdoni, who completed the inning, leaving two of Kane County’s base runners on base.

Galdoni proceeded to throw two more innings, letting up just one run, striking out two batters.

Yon Castro was put in to pitch the ninth inning for the Dogs. Castro was signed by Chicago during the Kane County series as bullpen depth. Castro has experience in the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers minor league systems, reaching as high as Double A Tulsa with Los Angeles.

Castro was disastrous in his Dogs debut, allowing a hit parade in the ninth inning for opposing batters. Kane County’s offense hit Castro hard, scoring three runs in the late inning.

The Dogs will look to turn things around on the road, facing the Sioux Falls Canaries for a three game series.
