GENEVA, Ill.On the heels of a rousing comeback win on opening night, the Dogs bats were stifled Wednesday evening in a 3-0 loss to the Kane County Cougars.

Eight-year MLB veteran Vance Worley burned through Chicago’s lineup, not allowing a hit until a Johnny Adams double in the fifth inning. Worley, who finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2011 with Philadelphia, pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no walks.

Meanwhile, the Cougars’ offense scored in the first inning on a Nick Zammarelli run-scoring groundout. Kane County then got triples from both Mark Karaviotis and Galli Cribbs Jr. in the second inning, producing two runs and a 3-0 lead.

That lead held until the ninth, as Kane County earned its first-ever win as a member of the American Association.

Righthander Greg Harris, whose father —also Greg — once pitched for Butch Hobson with the Boston Red Sox, started for the Dogs, lasting three innings. Southpaw and third-year Dog Jake Dahlberg entered in the fourth and reeled off three innings of perfection, striking out three in a middle relief masterclass.

The Dogs’ offense did muster some opportunities but stranded two runners in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings as Chicago dropped its first game of 2021.

The Cougars and Dogs battle again tomorrow at 6:30pm in Geneva. A radio broadcast of the game will be available at bit.ly/chidogsradio.
