SERIES NOTES: Series Notes July 15-17 SC

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Dogs won three straight one-run games in their sweep of the Sioux Falls Canaries and extended their franchise-record winning streak to nine.

Chicago (31-22, 3rd North) swept the Canaries on the back of dominant pitching and clutch hitting. In all three contests, the Dogs got game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the eighth or ninth innings. In game one, Victor Roache slugged a go-ahead ninth-inning homer, and Tony Rosselli did the same in games two and three.

D.J. Snelten, Wes Torrez and Luke Westphal all delivered phenomenal performances against one of the best offenses in the league. The Dogs now continue their road trip with three games against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park. All three games are scheduled to start at 7:12 PM.

LHP Jake Dahlberg gets the call for the series opener against the Explorers. Dahlberg is coming off another vintage start, most recently allowing two runs on four hits to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, his second-straight win. In his last outing against Sioux City, he threw seven scoreless frames, striking out six and walking none while giving up just four hits in a 3-1 win on June 1.

LHP Austin Wright gets the ball for game two. Wright has looked stronger as the season has progressed, and in his last two starts combined (12 IP), the southpaw struck out 20 batters and walked four, while giving up just two earned runs on eight hits. His 65 strikeouts rank third in the Association, just two behind second-place Mitchell Lambson of Winnipeg.

LHP D.J. Snelten will close out the series for the Dogs on Wednesday. The former San Francisco Giant delivered his second straight quality start (taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning) in a no-decision against Sioux Falls, lowering his opponents’ batting average against him to just .213. He has been a model of consistency in the Dogs rotation, allowing over three earned runs in a start just once since May 29.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS

The Sioux City Explorers (27-27, T-3rd South) are coming off back-to-back victories against the Milwaukee Milkmen, putting them three games out of first place in a mercurial South Division entering the series against Chicago, whom they sport a 1-2 season mark against.

As a team, their offensive and pitching numbers sit in the middle of the pack. However, infielder Nate Samson’s .332 average ranks seventh in the Association, and Jose Sermo has driven in 44 runs in 2019, good for second in the league to go with a team-leading eight home runs.
