SERIES NOTES: Series Notes July 19-21 GAR

GARY, Ind. — The Dogs won two of three games against the Sioux City Explorers and are within striking distance of a playoff spot as they wrap up their longest road trip of the year.

Chicago (33-23, 3rd North) was aided out by big-time offense in a Game Two win, a four-run ninth inning in the series finale win and lockdown bullpen efforts throughout to take their fourth straight series.

Now, the Dogs will face the Gary SouthShore RailCats, who they are 8-2 against on the year. Game One on Friday will begin at 7:10 PM. The resumption of a game that was suspended by fog the last time the Dogs visited Gary will be at 4:00 PM on Saturday, with the regularly-scheduled game scheduled to start 30 minutes after that game ends, and finally, the series finale on Sunday is set to begin at 2:10 PM.

LHP Luke Westphal gets the call for the series opener on Friday. The All-Star has certainly pitched like one lately, throwing 18 straight scoreless frames while walking five and striking out 27. Against Gary SouthShore specifically, Westphal has pitched 17.2 scoreless innings with 20 strikeouts and just four hits and five walks allowed. He still holds the league lead in strikeouts, with 83.

LHP Jake Dahlberg will start the Dogs’ suspended game against the RailCats on Saturday afternoon. Dahlberg snapped a streak of solid starts on Monday in the game one loss to Sioux City in which the X’s offense exploded for 12 runs on the day. The Dogs hope to get a solid outing out of their workhorse, who is the only Chicago arm to pitch a complete game this year.

RHP Wes Torrez will start game three on Saturday night. Torrez turned in his best start of the year last time out in a 4-3 game two win over Sioux Falls. He surrendered just two runs on three hits and two walks over five solid frames and is looking to build on the recent success.

LHP Austin Wright will finish out the series for Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Wright has pitched at his peak as of late, and in his last three starts has struck out 25 and allowed five earned runs total. Opponents are hitting a season-low .228 against Wright, who also has the third-most strikeouts in the Association with 70, racking all of them up in just over 50 innings of work this year.

SCOUTING THE RAILCATS

The Gary SouthShore RailCats (24-33, T-5th North) have had a tough season, but they are coming off two straight wins against the league-leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Rookie sensation Tom Walraven continues his offensive tear, last going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and six RBIs in the RailCats’ 10-7 win over the RedHawks on Thursday, raising his team-high batting average to .305. Sunday starter Justin Sinibaldi has also been red-hot lately, surrendering just one earned run in his last 20 innings pitched.
