A quiet Chicago Dogs offense forces the team to drop the series finale against the Sioux City Explorers, 5-2.
After a huge four run rally in the eighth inning Saturday night, momentum was expected to carry over into Sunday’s series finale, where the Dogs were searching for a series sweep over Sioux City.
Brooks Gosswein, the Chicago suburb native, started on the mound for the Dogs. After a rocky first start at Lake Country for Gosswein, the lefty settled into his new ball club, lasting for 4.2 innings of work, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out six batters.
Command was tricky for Gosswein, giving up five hits, while walking six batters. A similar trend continued for Dogs pitchers, as both Matt Walker and Eon Walda gave up runs in relief.
The Dogs offense failed to find a rhythm, collecting only three hits, while striking out a whopping 13 times.
Sioux City starting pitcher Jared Wetherbee looked excellent, striking out nine in his start, while only allowing one run on two hits. The former Philadelphia Phillies prospect has been lights out through his first two starts, pitching 10.0 innings, striking out 15 batters, only allowing two runs.
Chicago will begin a six game road trip, traveling to Winnipeg followed by a series rematch at Sioux City.
