The Chicago Dogs have agreed to a deal with veteran first baseman K.C. Hobson, the team announced Wednesday.
Entering his 11th professional season, Hobson joins the organization for his first stint in the American Association. He is the son of Dogs manager Butch Hobson, marking the third time the younger Hobson has suited up for his father.
K.C. Hobson spent the majority of the last four seasons playing for the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers, most recently slugging 19 home runs and driving in 66 runs in 2019.
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Hobson in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Stockdale High School in Bakersfield, California. In 2014, he ascended to Double-A, with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, and then pieced together a 14-home run campaign the following season in New Hampshire.
Hobson’s tenure with the Blue Jays organization ended in 2016, and he quickly joined his father’s Barnstormers. That season, he crushed a career-high 24 home runs in just 98 games, while batting at a .320 clip. Current Dogs hitting coach D.J. Boston was also a member of Lancaster’s coaching staff at the time.
Butch and K.C. Hobson actually appeared together in the final game of that season — Butch lined up at third base and K.C. at first base. As manager, Butch Hobson activated himself into the lineup, recorded one at-bat and fulfilled the dream of playing alongside his son.
“I think I became the oldest goat to play the game,” Butch Hobson said. “It was something I had to do, but don’t count on it happening again.”
K.C. Hobson projects to provide a power punch to a Dogs team that led the American Association in home runs in 2019.
“He’s a big, strong left-handed hitter,” Butch Hobson said. “He’s also very good defensively at first base.”
The elder Hobson also noted that his son will likely pitch a bit in Chicago, noting that the southpaw featured a fastball in the mid-90 MPH range in high school.
